How fast is mifi 2200

In router mode, however, it automatically connects itself to the Internet and shares that connection wirelessly to up to five other Wi-Fi devices. This mode works just like any other wireless router and clients can just pick up its signal automatically. The default network name SSID and the default encryption key are printed on the bottom of the device. In case you have changed those and forgotten the information, there's also a little reset hole on the bottom of the device that brings it back to its original default settings.

So generally, once the simple setup process is done, all you have to do is turn the MiFi on and you're ready to go. Features Given its tiny size, we didn't expect many features from the MiFi and were happy with what it has to offer.

By default, the router's Web interface is easily accessible by pointing the browser to this address: Here you'll find regular features including the capability to change the SSID, the encryption key, the default gateway IP address, and so on.

Other than that, we were impressed to find Port Forwarding, which is an advanced feature that allows for setting up special Internet applications such as an FTP server, an HTTP server, or a remote desktop connection. The Web interface itself was well organized and responsive, and works with any browser. It also gives the option to filter wireless clients via their MAC addresses. This is convenient when using handheld devices, such as VoIP phones, where you don't want to have to fiddle with typing in the encryption key.

Obviously, we'd like to see it support more, but considering its size, this number is fair. I ran a bunch of speed tests at Speedtest. One test on a Mac in the same room as MiFi said it would take 21 seconds to download an MP3 file, two minutes to grab a video clip, and 56 minutes to fetch a movie. In another under the same conditions, the numbers were far worse, about five minutes to fetch the MP3 file, 37 minutes for the video clip and minutes for the movie.

With MiFi in my basement, I was able to get a signal, albeit a spotty one, in a bedroom two stories above. As I drove in rush hour from northern New Jersey into New York City, a passenger in my car watched speeches from the White House correspondence dinner on Hulu, with only occasional buffering hiccups.

Battery life is a potential drawback for some customers. Verizon says you'll get about 40 hours of standby but only four hours in typical use, which seemed in line with my tests. What's more, the battery is likely to wimp out even faster if you're connecting multiple devices wirelessly. The battery can be replaced. MiFi is set to "sleep" during periods of inactivity. Fortunately, you can use MiFi as a hot spot while it's charging.

To test Internet speed, I used free online services that measured Internet speed and calculated the average. In the same locations, the Sprint MiFi reached 2.

The difference was negligible. At those rates, you can run Web conferences out of a hotel room. This is still impressive considering the large number of Wi-Fi routers in there. The MiFi can only service up to five devices at one time through its dynamic IP addressing. I was able to maintain four steady Internet connections but the fifth one was only semi-stable.

The MiFi is as compact as a full blown Wi-Fi router with handy features can get. Unfortunately, it runs a bit hotter than I prefer -- you don't want that in your pocket -- and battery life is too short. Still, if you are on the road and want your Wi-Fi enabled gadgets to reach the Web, the MiFi is a great choice. If you want a little extra, consider Sprint's MiFi, since it supports GPS, or an even more full-featured router that supports multiple 3G connections.

Only the iPhone has a mobile WAN connection. The rest rely on a local area network to connect. But when travelling, I find that most hotel and airport connections for Wi-Fi are either hideously overpriced or not very dependable, or both. To begin with, the MiFi was nearly plug-and-play. A push of the clearly labeled power button brought the MiFi up in less than 2 seconds. When I opened a browser window I was automatically redirected to a Virgin Mobile Web portal where I could purchase the connection time I needed.
