He claims this attracted the punk and rock bands that propelled Brixton Academy to icon status. However, it was not just successful as a music venue. Illegal raves in South London had become a huge problem for the police, so Parkes proposed legal raves at the Academy. These were a huge success, enticing acts such as Primal Scream and Happy Mondays to perform at them.

Where to stand: You want to get in the stalls, really, unless sitting down is a priority for you, in which case go for the unreserved seating in the balcony which in itself means you need to get there early to get a good spot.

Positioning yourself near these gets you the combination of a slightly less crowded environment, easy entry and exit, and ease of getting to the loo if you need it. Overall: There are a great many people who love the Academy.

There is a disabled ramp at the building entrance, a disabled toilet at the rear of the auditorium and a first aid room is available. There are around 80 stairs to the circle seating, there is a handrail on all stairs leading up to the circle but there are no handrails in the circle itself.
